Long Version:
I was born in India in 1987. I was told I never actually had a birthday in my birth city, New Delhi, and I moved here shortly before I turned 2, so I have very little recollection of the place, just memories mostly from visits afterward in the early nineties. When I came to America, we moved into NY. This is where I spent my entire childhood, right on the outskirts of New York City, my dad worked in the Garment District. I frequently went into the city, and lived in a rural neighborhood with a very urban crowd, so I grew up with a hip-hop and alternative music scene. I define my life with music, I can describe at any time how I’m feeling with a song.
At the age of 12, my dad told me he was closing his company and got an irresistible job offer in California, and we were moving to Los Angeles. Heartbreaking, and maybe I’ll tell you the story sometime, but we moved and I spent 7th grade on the west coast. It sucked, I had very few friends, but I had some very distinct and life-changing memories. I think this is around where my childhood ended. Uprooted twice, that’s right, we moved again, after I turned 13 (and a long story), we moved back to the East Coast. Stayed in a family friend’s place for a short bit, and then moved to NJ. God, I love this state. I spent all of 8th grade and high school in one town, in one state. Thank goodness. After I graduated high school, my parents moved to a smaller house that was closer to Rutgers. Fantastic, that’s what I wanted, to have my parents follow me to college now. In the end, it actually ended up being really nice, having a safety net less than ten minutes away. Anyhow, here I am now, on the brink of the real world. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.
